big dummy rack

February 27th, 2010

The prototype front rack for my big dummy has finally been powdercoated and mounted. I look forward to giving it a thorough testing with properly shaped objects like beer, bread, flowers and small dogs.

First item of business: since BC-Rack is a side project of a few employees at a local bike shop and the busy season looms near, we are putting a hold on building racks. We will still take orders, but unless you’re willing to pay a summer labor surcharge they will not be built until autumn. Our normal winter turnaround time is 1-3 weeks. Pretty good in the world of custom bicycle bits.

Second item of business: alex finally got around to building himself a proper touring bike. I cannot remember being so excited about a bike that wasn’t my own. Here are some photos that show off his fine craftsmanship:

A customer sent along pictures of his new Pugsley front rack. I must say, this is one of the finest pugsleys I have ever seen. It’s pretty cool to see one of our racks on this thing.

A few changes

November 25th, 2009

The latest batch of Pugsley racks came back from the powdercoater yesterday. If you purchased a rack, it will ship out today. The most notable change from the prototype rack that I’ve been using is more tire clearance. I had problems with things rubbing against the tire since the amount of clearance was so limited. These new racks are slightly elevated to allow for both fenders and non-rigid bags, etc. Here is a photo:

More shots of this rack can be found in the gallery.

There are a couple of test racks that we’ve been working on that have not yet made it to the powdercoater. One is going to go on my Big Dummy. It is similar in design to the Pugsley rack, except that it has a rail around it. This will make it much more convenient for tossing unstrapped items into it. We’re contemplating fabricating some kind of wooden deck for the bottom. The other rack is one that Alex has been building for his own Pugsley. It’s similar to the existing design, but includes personal touches like a front light mount for his Seca 900. It should be pretty cool.

Testing pugsley front rack #3

Pugsley at wirth

This is the third Pugsley front rack prototype. Unlike the first two that were designed to attach to the cantilever posts, I opted to go larger and make use of the Pugsley’s fork eyelets. The result was a very stiff rack with a larger platform. I also discovered that, although it was not a design feature, I could attach my Ortlieb panniers. This was incidental and probably wouldn’t be true of all panniers. My objective was primarily to use it as a top loading rack, and for that, it has been wonderful. I have used it for errands, the 2009 Almanzo gentleman’s ride (carrying snacks and camera), camping trips and packrafting. My typical large volume setup is to load up a kayak drybag and strap it on using Surly junk straps. For smaller stuff I have a canvas military bag.

Handling has been very good, especially for a front rack running on low pressure tires that have a tendency to dive into turns. It has not been ideal for mountain biking, but on loose, soft terrain like sand it has helped to create a more balanced front to rear weight distribution.

A few things that we’ve talked about or already implemented on future versions: an elevated platform (I have had some problems with loose items drooping far enough to make contact with the tire), an integrated light mount, and possibly water bottle mounts ala adventure forks like the Salsa Fargo’s.

More photos of this rack can be seen in the gallery section.
